The
Kakabeka Falls Shorin-Ryu Karate Club has approx. 30 members and was
established in1996. The style, Shorin-Ryu is one of several types of
Karate that comes from the Japanese Island of Okinawa and reflects the
attitude and personality of the people there. Like Canadians, they are
known for being a gentle and reserved people who try to avoid
confrontation but are extremely ferocious when they feel the cause is just
and there is no alternative but to defend themselves. Okinawa is situated
between China and Japan and in times past was exposed to visitors of these
two cultures. It became a mixing ground of the various martial arts of
Okinawa, China and Japan.
The result was the birth of Karate (Kara = Empty, Te = Hand).
At
the Kakabeka Falls Shorin-Ryu Club the priority of the junior belt class
is on a positive family environment, re-enforcing those values and
principles taught in the home. In addition, the children are taught modern
techniques of recognizing and avoiding danger, as well as knowing when and
how to defend themselves. In the adult class we build on this and train
our mental and physical responses for real life confrontations. Most of
our members originally come to class to lose weight and get in shape.
However, with our positive learning environment, the family atmosphere and
the progressively minded training, the student usually starts to embrace
Karate as an art. The students enjoy the combination of tradition, the
mixture of ancient and modern training techniques and the overall
confidence and feeling of achievement that comes from rigorous training.
Newcomers are always welcome.
